25.05.2023Wounds dont matter. Toughness an the ability to lessen ap are what matter. An any trans human mechanic after that. Artillary side its even worse. If gw takes away gaurds artillary exemption then the new field battery will never be used as a bombbard. Str 6 is not enough to use a artillary unit. Mortors are cheap enough that spray an pray is okay. The new book needed to keep the data slate to be competitive. To sell the models you need to make strong rules for them.

24.05.2023Wonder what GW will do if AM is still at 40% winrate even with the new codex xD
UnkaStunka
24.05.2023Well of course, did you really belive anything else?

24.05.2023I'm sure there will be several FAQs released to completely ruin any unique aspects of the codex and render it unusable, just like they've done to Leagues of Votann.

24.05.2023Played my first game with the new Codex and ran without the balance dataslate. It was horrible. Infantry is worse and more expensive, orders are worse and harder to play. Artillery was useless. Basicly the only redeeming thing was that Leman russes hit on 3+. I got so dissapointed after waiting two years i honestly consider just taking a break untill 10th đ

24.05.2023Hammer of the Emperor and barrage should stay AoC should go
13thCenturyJackassInACan
24.05.2023My view on it: Guard lose everything on their CODEX part of the dataslate. So 2+ Russes, splashing orders, hammer of the emperor and so on. If we follow the NO DATASLATE logic, it would mean we can take more fliers, right? AoC and artillery were, for better or worse, a Dataslate for the core/GT book, not any of the codexes in particular.
Martin Francis
24.05.2023For every rule in the balance dataslate there is an answer in the codex. These rules haven't been dropped, they've been tweaked and put in as rules. Hammer of the emperor is born soldiers, indirect Haa take aim order and a doctrine for +1 to hit, the orders spill over as part of the new rules and AoC is lessened to track guards.
Corellian
24.05.2023Thing is Guard players have consistently shown they will still play the army no matter how bad it gets, same with Ork players. The player base is so stable I think GW aren't that careful about nerfing it, unlike Votann or Drukhari.
On a less cynical note, the codex is probably supposed to offset the removal of AoC and LOS artillery, not giving Guard all the toys but forcing us to choose either good artillery, good tanks, good infantry etc. Time will tell if that's the case.
grouchypotato wolfpack
24.05.2023I can see it now. 10th rolls out, and guard gets shafted again. "But you just got a codex"
HumanHaggis
24.05.2023Really seems like an awful update, overall. Some new, truly broken units like rough riders and the special characters waiting for their immediate post-release nerf, some much-needed updates to bring the armor in-line with other factions paired with nerfs just to make sure nothing is really good, massive nerf to scions, kasrkin as a gimmick unit that mostly functions off of one specific relic or stratagem, loss of several options in the form of taking multiple company or platoon commanders, veterans, conscripts, priests are essentially useless, every cheap unit option increased in base price, lost Yarrick, lost move, move, move, first rank fire second rank fire nerfed. Even the new ordinance batteries are quite bad. I suppose we can look forward to more cookie-cutter lists and fewer options with every new book.
Jackson Ashworth
21.05.2023Well, I definitely feel validated for tempering my expectations for the codex. It's still really disappointing how poorly the guard codex has been handled. It's especially a slap in the face compared to how OP most other codexes have been when first released throughout this whole edition…

21.05.2023I feel like you must have seen the same Reddit post as me
Dutch
21.05.2023That balaning nerf is bullshit, less artillery, because multiple vehicles loosing squadron, and losing no minuses to indirect fire is just a slap in the face.
Migraine
21.05.2023Hmm it will be good to see how we perform with the new codex without the balance. I dont think we are going to be overpowered but will put up a good fight. Remember we are the imperial guard no super soldiers just ordinary men and women with basic equipment clogging up the guns of our enemies with our bodies. đ«Ą

21.05.2023If we could just get rid of all armour of contempt that'd be great.

21.05.2023I am just so tired of GW releasing new stuff and then immediately turning around and nerfing it into the ground.
Liquid Dude
21.05.2023Russ is too good, thats ok but keep it just for baneblade and the big ones….
Brett Schall
21.05.2023Love the content but you also have a great voice for it.
Not Nubilous
21.05.2023What's even the point of codex's if they get FAQ'd within a week. Seriously. Who wants to spend $50 for information that will be worthless. GW sort your shit out.
Dark O-man
21.05.2023âHere, have the codex early because we are a predatory companyâŠ.but donât use it yetâ and you guys expect me to feel bad about đŽââ ïž?
DJRaffa1000
20.05.2023I really hope they at least keep their barrage exemtion because if not nobody will take artillery, which is amongst the most iconic guard thing you could have on the table.
In fact i dont think the barrage Nerv was needed other than on tau SMS. … just krank their points (and maybe reduce the AP) and remove the global rule all together
Dark O-man
20.05.2023WellâŠif they do this, itâs going push guard players away from variation.
Both AoC & Barrage should stay
Bluecho4
20.05.2023I question whether the Barrage exception IS going away. It's not really a rule applied directly to Guard. But rather a game-wide rule, under which the Guard are named as an exception. A subtle difference, but one that might imply "Guard don't have Dataslate adjustment" doesn't apply to Barrage. It's not them being buffed, but rather them being excluded from a game-wide nerf.
Marcin Obuchowski
20.05.2023I played without the balance dataslate and it was OK altho the vehicles can hardly be called tough.
time revive
20.05.2023I'm fine with dropping Armour of Contempt, but if they take out the Indirect Fire one I'm gonna be pissed. I didn't waif years for that Codex to then have worse artillery than we had before
HidesHisFace
20.05.2023Didn't we have a discussion about if codices are worth buying?
Yeah… About that. Isn't this like the second codex basically completely invalidated by FAQ/dataslate recently?
Totally worth your money!
Andrew Salerno-Garthwaite
20.05.2023I used to say the new codex was a side-grade
Equos
20.05.2023Sure, and let sisters keep AOC on their T3 infantry…. jesus GW…
STOP BUYING CODICES PEOPLE. SEND THEM THE MESSAGE. Ffs…
The_Gobfather
20.05.2023Lets be honest, ignores line of sight shooting is fun for exactly one player. AoC is also a pretty unpopular rule even among AoC armies, IMO Russ's with 2+ sv and AoC for their cost is pretty hard for many factions to kill.
Atom Fliege
20.05.2023Did i get that right? Codex released like a week ago and now the rules are already out of date?
Gordon Fenton
19.05.2023I doubt I will invest in the new codex and just keep relying on Wahapedia instead. The way the recent codex launches have gone, space dwarfs in particular, I have little confidence in it staying unchanged for long. Added to that is the expected 10th edition launch next year, which could for all we know make the 9th edition codex totally obsolete. Removing the barrage exemption rules does make taking artillary a lot less attractive. I personally hate seeing Leman Russ spammed armies as it kind of makes you wonder what is the point of all the other guard units.
As for regiments, Cadia is gone, dead destroyed (its like the monty python dead parrot sketch) why not give the other regiments some love. Outside of a few catachan and kit bashing Krieg kill team figures the only other choice is to use other games figures and even then GW have effectively killed the regimental history of the other options.
Hammdog Porkington
19.05.2023Have they stated when 10th edition will drop?
Ben Ironside
19.05.2023You would have thought GW would have known how to write the rules for a game by now.
Henry Barker
19.05.2023I want everyone to get rid of armour of contempt… trash rule design
William Vega
19.05.2023Can someone explain to me why people are so torn on the whole artillery thing. Which is to say some say âGuard artillery is oppressive and removing their exception will make it better for everyone else since guard artillery is OPâ and the other side saying âGuard artillery fire is swingy and also doesnât do as much damage as one would think and on top of that they hit on 4+ and have no ability to defend themselvesâ. Iâm over here just sitting wondering what is happening? Also if they remove the artillery exception for guard mean that guard artillery which is made to be taken a lot will be made to hit on 5+ remove 1AP and add 1+ save, cause if so their really is no reason for artillery.
Thomas Riddle
19.05.2023Cool my basilisk is useless again thanks gw

19.05.2023I see so much controversy about rulebook changes lately it makes me happy I never got into the models. I was very close, had multiple codices bought and made a list of what I planned to buy on paper. Don't understand why the stats can't just be set in stone. I'll just stick with the books and games. Picked up the magic decks too for 40k, but I think I'll pass on the plastic. It's too expensive/time consuming to be worried if your faction is going to be arbitrarily boned due to rule changes.
Jay Salmon
19.05.2023chaos space marines kept armour of contempt but they don't have army wide t8 vehicles with 2+ saves. The guard codex looks good to me so far without the rule. They probably need to keep the inderect fire or their artillery isn't looking very good, but I dont feel their tanks need to be any tougher. The baneblade and its children already look like a nightmare to deal with much less Russ spam.
Nick Sobanski
19.05.2023When I saw that +1 to your save against dmg 1 weapons thing, I had a feeling they would be losing it.
Riff Silver
19.05.2023Losing AOC makes sense but exemption from the barrage nerf just seems lore accurate with the artillery of the guard, -1 to hit is painful on 5+ BS as Iâve tested
RTL97
13.05.2023Wish the plaguebursts mortar was unaffected by the indirect fire rule. Before the nerf, you may kill one or two marines in cover, now you struggle to kill one
Supreme Grand Master Kaldor Draigo
13.05.2023Does this mean world eaters don't get armor of contempt when it comes out. Asking for my wallet.
Titouan Lange
13.05.2023Thanks god they loose it
Doctor Double Dakka
13.05.2023MAYBE we can un-nerf artillery's? change a couple points costs for a few strong outliers
Aurélien Gasnier
13.05.2023I think the updated dataslate has to be released with the new codex, which we can predict a date, I guess? The barrage exemption is a bit unfair, especially the AP part (given the low BS of guard I understand this part). For those saying there is no interest in taking artillery without this rule for the guard in front of spam leman russ, I would say 1) leman russ will be quite nerfed also if they lose AoC 2) the primary use for artillery is to reach any point of the table, regardless of the LoS or range (almost), thus it is quite complementary with the role of the tanks. No offense, just my point of view on this.
DG Booth
13.05.2023Guard have no real reason to maintain the barrage exemption, it was just a minor hand hold to keep people playing Guard while they wait for their new book.
damein343
13.05.2023the loss of the Artillery buff feels bigger than AOC.
Kevin B
13.05.2023Wouldnât be guard without two steps forward and one step back. Hoorah.
Zach Drake
13.05.2023Honestly as a Guard and R&H player I donât mind that much. I could beat those armies before the dataslate and Iâll beat them after.
Donât let tourney clown world be how everything must be balanced.
